Laurence Thumbing

Hi. I'm Laurence Shelley

Northam Orchard Hill - Town

I am a Devonian, a past teacher and entrepreneur and Northam resident for over 20 years.

As a founding trustee of Bideford Sustainability Group, I researched many local issues for articles in 'My Town' magazine, helped develop Morwenna Community Garden and am a passionate supporter of local food producers and enterprises.

My interests include walking, writing, Scrabbling, wildlife conservation, gardening and whatever contributes to people's sense of wellbeing.

As an old hitchhiker I feel that we all need a lift in these uncertain times and I have 3 grandchildren who remind me how little I know. What I do know is that I will speak up for young people's interests and champion greater public participation in local democracy.

Hi. I'm Jonathan Rose

Torrington - Town & District

ELECTED!!!

I came to Great Torrington in 1975 and at 19 was the youngest worker in the condensary at the milk factory. I helped to lay pathways on the Commons and to build the lake and later as a town councillor, led a group of volunteers to upgrade seven miles of pathways outside the Commons.

I campaign for the environment and live my life in tune with recycling and sustainable use of resources. I sat on the regional council of the Green Party for a few years, promoting national awareness of pollution and still help local groups clean beaches.

As a councillor I will encourage landowners and the whole community to support biodiversity in the face of climate change.

Hi. I'm Carl Hawkins

Bideford West - Town & District

I am now 47 years old, my family and I have always lived in Bideford, currently, I am self-employed and work in many areas related to media and IT.

My household comprises of myself, my wife Tina and my two daughters aged 17 and 13 who are Savannah and Trinity, we also have a big dog called Luka, 2 rats, 2 fish and 9 ferrets...Yes, 9...

I have never had any previous desire to get involved with anything like politics, its all just noise and childish antics that those people in London participate in.. for the most part nothing they seem to do has anything to do with our life other than raising costs on an ever increasing scale.

Politics to me is simply something that goes on elsewhere and has little impact on our everyday lives.

Something happened several months ago that made me take a step back from the mundane everyday events, remove my blinkers and made me take a look at our local community, It's embarrassing for me to say i had blinkers on but I think today's society can make us all like that.

That something was attending a meeting held by TCG where I had the pleasure of meeting some great local people, people that had a lot to say about the sorry state that the area of Torridge finds itself in..

BUT...

The most important thing I learnt from that first meeting is that these people WANTED to listen to everyone that attended, from the confident woman at the front of the room to the quiet shy guy at the back (That was me by the way.. The guy!), there was a desire to listen and act and interact with each other to help solve problems within the Torridge area.

TCG aims to build communities, listen and act on the community's wishes, to build relationships and to empower the community to control and have their say in what goes on where they live.

Now, after spending some time in Torrington recently and talking to members of the public we found that these basic expectations of what a council should be like i.e. Community Minded were not being met and it doesn't even come close to being an adequate system for the community, its clear that we need to make changes to this out of date system AND SOON!!

There are a few buzzwords, two of which are "Sustainable" and "Transparency" that are thrown around today, you only need to do a little research on local websites to see there no transparency in how the council operates and there's nothing sustainable about their actions if we let them continue to control YOUR environment.

I need things to change for my family, for my children and grandchildren (Not for a while though kids)..and I do not see any way of progressing and improving our community without changing how its managed.

I am standing for election because I want to make our Torridge the type of place that thrives now and in the future, I ask you please stand with us.

Carl Hawkins.

Barnstorm March 10th

Hello and welcome to this page, Carl here with my thoughts on the recent Barnstorm event held at polyfield on the 10th March 2019, right at this moment I am putting together my thoughts on how our day went.. Please check back soon...

For now i have added photos taken on the day should anyone like to use them for social media.

Peter and Annabelle Macfadyen

What a great talk from Peter and his wife Annabelle, it was great to have the opportunity to listen to how they found the process of changing the town of Frome from how it used to be to what it is now...

Its a fresh new way of working that actually shouldn't be that surprising to any of us, you know valuing the community in which we live, striving to work together to reclaim our common ground, if you want a better idea of what can be achieved then take a moment to watch this video, also watch the video on our home page, you will then get a much better idea of what we want for the area of Torridge.

Heroes of Torridge

There are some great people and work being done in the Torridge area, these people do what they do not for any kind of accolade or a pat on the back saying how great they are, these people are part of what makes our community flourish and they continuously strive to improve the areas in which they live and the lives of the people they meet.

If you know of anyone that you think deserves a mention here for the work they do within the Torridge district then please do let us know.

Change:HOW? #20 Peter Macfadyen

Peter is the Mayor of Frome, northeast Somerset, the author of Flatpack Democracy, and has worked in areas of social justice for 35 years. He is one of the founders Independents for Frome, created to support a group of individuals to stand and get elected to Frome Town Council in 2011.

Ten of the seventeen who stood were elected. This has given IfF an outright majority on the council that has allowed a raft of ambitious ideas to be implemented over the last three years.

One of the keys to their success is that the group operate a ‘Way of Working’ . This enables them to make decisions in the best interest of Frome, while not emulating the Party Political system.

By operating broadly as normal people do in normal everyday life, they have taken the opportunities presented by Localism whilst looking for ways to change, for the better, the relationships between people and those they elect.
