Daniel Gardening 1

Hi. I'm Daniel Bell

Northam Orchard Hill - Town

I have grown up in North Devon and have lived in Northam for the last four years. I trained as a footballer with Exeter City aged 11-18 and went on to play semi-professionally both locally and abroad, as well as coaching.

Working as an artist, teacher and gardener it is apparent to me the vital role that vision and creativity have to play in reviving grass-roots democracy and community life, making it more engaging and participatory and challenging existing conventions, dogmas and structures that no longer serve the greater good of the community.

I have helped to shape Torridge Common Ground and will work for you as councillor, guided by our principles for positive change.

ELECTED!!!

I came to Great Torrington in 1975 and at 19 was the youngest worker in the condensary at the milk factory. I helped to lay pathways on the Commons and to build the lake and later as a town councillor, led a group of volunteers to upgrade seven miles of pathways outside the Commons.

I campaign for the environment and live my life in tune with recycling and sustainable use of resources. I sat on the regional council of the Green Party for a few years, promoting national awareness of pollution and still help local groups clean beaches.

As a councillor I will encourage landowners and the whole community to support biodiversity in the face of climate change.

Agenda for TCG Confluence Meeting – 19th March 2019

TCG Confluence Meeting - 19th March 2019 - Draft Agenda

1/ Welcome and Introductions

2/ TCG and the new democratic vision.

Independence. TCG presents an inclusive non-party-political community platform and will work with all like-minded councillors to forge a consensus on policies and actions.

Listening to and reflecting the voice of the community in all its diversity.

Transparency in producing a Manifesto, reporting back on outcomes, showing both the courage to challenge conventions which discourage public participation and the humility to admit that TCG does not have all the answers.

3/ Voice of existing councillors

Experience of council work: achievements, challenges, obstacles.
Future priorities and realistic objectives.
Potential benefits of working together.

4/ TCG Manifesto

Opportunity to view Manifesto Summary (copies available and key principles/policies
displayed on barn walls) and for existing councillors to put stickers on any policy they empathise with and would value further discussion on.

5/ Breakout groups to hold open forum on most highlighted policies, identify common aims and objectives and how best to achieve them together.

6/ Identify wards where TCG and other councillors can work together to best effect, recognizing that the number of members representing wards can vary widely.

7/ Nominate wards where TCG candidates might think of standing.
Make a list of these and of other councillors to work with.

8/ Practical guidance for prospective candidates on form-filling, etc.

9/ Concluding remarks and thanks.

Barnstorm March 10th

Hello and welcome to this page, Carl here with my thoughts on the recent Barnstorm event held at polyfield on the 10th March 2019, right at this moment I am putting together my thoughts on how our day went.. Please check back soon...

For now i have added photos taken on the day should anyone like to use them for social media.

Peter and Annabelle Macfadyen

What a great talk from Peter and his wife Annabelle, it was great to have the opportunity to listen to how they found the process of changing the town of Frome from how it used to be to what it is now...

Its a fresh new way of working that actually shouldn't be that surprising to any of us, you know valuing the community in which we live, striving to work together to reclaim our common ground, if you want a better idea of what can be achieved then take a moment to watch this video, also watch the video on our home page, you will then get a much better idea of what we want for the area of Torridge.

Heroes of Torridge

There are some great people and work being done in the Torridge area, these people do what they do not for any kind of accolade or a pat on the back saying how great they are, these people are part of what makes our community flourish and they continuously strive to improve the areas in which they live and the lives of the people they meet.

If you know of anyone that you think deserves a mention here for the work they do within the Torridge district then please do let us know.

38DLive “Flatpack Democracy” mini-doc

Frome is one of the places where this all started here in the UK, people ask us what TCG is all about.. What can be done? How does it work? and why even bother?..

Take a moment to watch through this video, listen to what ordinary Frome people have to say about how this project worked out for them, listen to business owners explain how they found an increase in sales and visually witnessed greater wellbeing within the community.

This is what TCG wants to achieve AND we can, but we need your help, with that help we can make a difference and move things into a brighter future.

The essentials

Please create an account on Act Build Change and take training 2,3 and 4.

This will help you with power mapping, one-to-one, running house meetings and getting your stories slick.

Turn out

How are do you get people to show up to vote? Who do you focus your attention on? How do you build the people power you need to make the change you seek? This links will help you.

A piece I wrote on how to build up your numbers: https://actbuildchange.com/blog/how-to-get-people-to-turn-up-and-take-charge/

This is Sam Coates from Campaign together who support all parties in marginal seats to defeat the conservatives. https://actbuildchange.com/blog/how-to-stop-a-conservative-supermajority/

Telling your story

How do you craft your story of you, us (Torridge Common Ground) and now (why people need to show up now for you).

Door Knocking

These are the 4 key canvassing skills. Tone, Body Language, Genuine Curiosity, and Eye Contact. These skills help make a positive and lasting impression with people.

Tone

  • Speak like you confidently, remember this is your community and you’re talking as a neighbor with shared concerns
  • Make sure you are matching tone with the voter - are they in a rush, are they reluctant, chatty
  • How can we best have a conversation that suits their attitude, or change that attitude to one that’s more receptive?

Body Language

  • You make your first impression at the door before you even say hello. Make sure to smile, be upbeat and make eye contact
  • Awareness of open vs closed body language
  • Body language is something that plays a large role in setting us at ease, or on edge, and is a large part of how we communicate as humans

Eye Contact

  • Eye contact keeps voters engaged and shows you are listening
  • It helps create a personal connection and rapport with the voter

Genuine Curiosity

  • This is important for making sure that we can relate personally to their life
  • Ask questions
  • Listen actively
  • Repeat concerns back to make sure you are understanding each other
